Lying in the Valley of 1000 Palms, in the north of the island of Lanzarote, the small town of Haria is perhaps the prettiest on the island. Having something of a Middle-Eastern feel, the village is greener than anywhere else in Lanzarote’s stark volcanic landscape. The palm trees originated from an old custom of the 17th and 18th centuries, when new palm trees were planted each time a baby was born.
Visitors will find it pleasant to while away a hour or two in the Plaza Leon y Castillo, a shady tree-lined square in the centre of the village. If you are visiting on a Saturday, you will find a nice little handicraft market in the square - a great place to pick up a souvenir or two.
Lanzarote’s favourite son, César Manrique, moved into a farm house just outside Haria in an effort to get away from the public eye.
For the best views of Haria, approach from the north.
